The need to implement Agenda 21 (UNCED Rio Summit) is widely acknowledged. Translating this knowledge into action requires widespread understanding. The onus is on us to make sustainable development in the North and South possible - for ourselves and for generations to come.
Stiftung Zukunftsfähigkeit (the Foundation for Sustainability) - established in Bonn in December 1997 and officially registered in January 1998 - has set itself the goal of supporting Agenda 21-related measures in Germany and making constructive contributions to its implementation. Despite the escalation of social and ecological crises and global conflict, industrialised nations like Germany must still bridge the enormous gap between knowing that something needs to be done and unlocking the will to actually implement change.
In Germany the Foundation achieved broad-based success when, as a result of its initiative, mandatory disclosure of ethical pension fund investments was anchored in German pension legislation.
The Foundation for Sustainability will give particular support to Germanwatch. Since 1991, this Bonn-based non-profit, non-governmental organisation (NGO) has lobbied and taken action on closely linked issues of ecology, development and human rights.
The foundation may choose to sponsor similar initiatives and organisations on a case-by-case basis. To avoid any misunderstanding, we should like to state that neither individuals nor organisations should apply to the foundation for grants. The foundation's annual activities and the organisations to which yearly returns may be donated are decided by the Executive Board in accordance with the articles and based on recommendations made by the Board of Trustees.
The Foundation for Sustainability intends to develop its capabilities step by step. To achieve this, we rely on numerous donors who have helped us build up our initial resources.
